diff software package provides dummy transitional package for diff -> diffutils, you can install in your Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) by running the commands given below on the terminal,
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install diff
diff is installed in your system.
Make ensure the diff package were installed using the commands given below,
$ sudo dpkg-query -l | grep diff *
You will get with diff package name, version, architecture and description in a table
